Meir of Rothenberg

Meir of Rothenberg
(c. 1215-93)
   German teacher, scholar, tosaphist and communal leader. He was born in Worms. He became the outstanding rabbinic authority of his generation. He was imprisoned by Emperor Rudolf I at Ensisheim in 1286 for attempting to settle in Palestine; refusing to be ransomed lest European rulers begin to blackmail other communities in a similar way, he died a prisoner. His body was ransomed 14 years later. He wrote numerous responsa, as well as tosaphot and novellae to 18 tractates of the Talmud.
